In 2009, thanks to Michael Behr, I was invited to record an album in Germany at the famed Stockfisch Studios.

From there, my love affair with German audiences began..

This album is my little thank you to them.

The story of the cover

When this album began, I knew I wanted the cover to reflect my experience of Germany. As it turns out, a large majority of that experience is spent at railway stations.

This is my first idea for the cover — graphically recreated Deutschebahn signs, with highlighted letters spelling out “SONGS IN THE KEY OF DE.”

I sent this picture to Cormac, my son, who was helping me create the album artwork and design.

We began recreating the signs, using the names of stations that were related to the songs I was recording.

The designs changed and shifted throughout the process.

At one point, we considered a sticker look — the kind of sticker you might find on the front of a faded suitcase at Karlsruhe Station.

Until we decided on having the stations written over and over again (blending into one another as they often can do when you’re in the middle of a tour) with the title of the album hidden amongst the names — with a special Buxtehüde surprise at…
